imbalance in apprenticeship positions in the habberge district: these areas urgently need applicants

Low birth rate, shortage of skilled workers, weak economy – and yet no doom and gloom: the committee for labor, economy and regional development of the habberge district council dealt in its meeting in particular with the current training situation in the habberge district. The local discrepancy between applicants and advertised positions is sometimes massive.

According to peter stretz of the employment agency, the training market has developed in favor of applicants over the past ten years, as there are more advertised positions than applicants. In august 2019, there were 612 in-company training positions for every 511 applicants in the habberge district. But not every area benefits. "Young people want to do more office jobs after finishing school", explains stretz. While there are 64 applicants for every 27 available positions in the administrative sector, the situation is reversed in the skilled trades and nursing professions.

Shortage in the care sector

For example, only four young people applied for 20 training positions as painters or plasterers, and only two for 28 positions in food sales. "It’s a gross imbalance", sums up stretz. Particularly dramatic is the training situation in the nursing professions, where it is currently very difficult to find new recruits. "It’s no longer just about nurses for the elderly, but also about health and medical care workers.", admonishes stretz. Five percent of applicants remain unplaced, i.E. Without a training place. But stetz gives the all-clear: "with whom it is until the 1. September still hasn’t worked out, we’ll give you an offer of a bridge."

The low birth rate also had a negative impact on the educational situation in the district, because fewer children also mean fewer school-leavers. The number of graduates is not expected to increase in the next five years. "The good years are over! The female each", noted district administrator wilhelm schneider in this connection. While the number of qualifying degrees has stagnated at around 200 over the past three years, there have been significantly fewer students taking intermediate or high school diplomas.

Successful integration

The committee, on the other hand, was satisfied with the graduates of the integration classes: of 63 habfurt students, 58 percent were able to enter vocational training or further education directly after graduation. "This is very positive", says schneider. "But we must continue to accompany the young people." Stretz concludes by warning against an overly negative outlook for the future: "the market will change, but it will not become a serious problem for young people."
